Old Is New. Architectural Works by New Material Research Laboratory
Japanese architectural firm New Material Research Laboratory’s first monograph, ‘Old Is New. Architectural Works by New Material Research Laboratory’ (English edition) was published by Lars Müller Publishers. The Japanese edition was published by Heibonsha simultaneously.
New Material Research Laboratory was established by contemporary Japanese artist and photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto and architect Tomoyuki Sakakida in 2008. Since then, they research the materials and techniques used in ancient times, the Middle Ages and the modern period and aim to reinterpret them in a contemporary context through architecture. In the book, their ten years of works, including MOA Museum of Art and Enoura Observatory, are featured with more than 130 photographs by Hiroshi Sugimoto as well as architectural drawings.
