Teruhiro Yanagihara has designed a small fashion store ‘Mame Kurogouchi’ with unusual 13mm thickness cast-in-place concrete in an old renovated row house. The Hanegi store was developed to create a place to explain fashion to customers in their own words. It locates near their atelier in Hanegi, a small town in Tokyo and the store is open only on the weekend.
The designer Teruhiro Yanagihara said, “We wanted to create a space with a method of using the skills of craftsmen and tackling new challenges. Because that's Mame Kurogouchi's approach to fashion design, and I wanted to build this store in the same way.” Based on the concept, the interior was constructed in an acrobatic approach, with only 13 mm thickness concrete poured on-site. They experimented with making the thinnest concrete possible, and through a unique formula, they achieved this extra-thin concrete.
The designer said that even though the store was tiny, he designed a narrow corridor leading to the shop area in order to create a special feeling like a Japanese traditional tea room. Also, in response to the client’s request for a space that fits in the local city, a large glass window with a clear view of the surroundings was installed.
