Keisuke Fujiwara of Keisuke Fujiwara Design Office designed the fixtures and display furniture for this special exhibition, held at me gallery. IKKO TANAKA ISSEY MIYAKE is a collection inspired by the works of celebrated graphic designer Ikko Tanaka, and this fourth instalment was presented as a limited-time special exhibition on the second floor of me ISSEY MIYAKE / AOYAMA in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo — a space designed by Naoto Fukasawa Design.
For the exhibition, Fujiwara designed three display tables with spherical bases, along with wall-mounted hanger fixtures. He reflects on his involvement with the collection: "I was given the opportunity to work on the spatial design for this collection when it launched in 2016. Each time, I drew inspiration from Ikko Tanaka's graphics and developed a spatial concept to suit the garments of that particular season. For this fourth edition, the silhouettes of the garments were themselves shaped after Tanaka's graphic designs, so I created steel tabletops cut to the actual scale of the pattern pieces, then paired them with bases sculpted three-dimensionally from soft urethane foam."
On the choice of urethane for the bases, Fujiwara explains: "Because it was a limited-run exhibition, the client was open to exploring materials we'd never be able to use in a permanent store — so we took the opportunity to use urethane foam as a display fixture. There were no issues with durability, but urethane does tend to yellow when exposed to UV light, so we applied a pale white coat to the surface to guard against discolouration."
Three tabletop variations were produced to correspond with the different product lines, with each item placed directly onto the tabletop whose shape it matches, allowing the display to complete itself in a uniquely intuitive way. Another considered touch is the off-centre positioning of the supporting leg — rather than being fixed at the centre of the tabletop, it's deliberately offset, freeing up space on the urethane base to display accessories and smaller pieces alongside the garments.
