Koizumi Studio has designed a minimal-style boutique ‘Plantation’ in Aoyama, a town known as a centre of fashion in Tokyo. Plantation was founded in 1982 and creates timeless clothes made to fit into everyday life with authentic materials.

The designer Makoto Koizumi recalled, “Based on the concept of the brand, we installed authentic raw materials such as timber and steel in essential parts, while the rest of the space was painted in white as a margin.” At the centre of the ground floor, a custom-made clothing rack was designed to be stable with only a few thin wooden legs. The joints that support the curve pipes were carefully designed and achieved by meticulous construction.

Koizumi said, “In terms of the figure-ground relationship, only the clothing rack is a figure in the ground floor. For the rest of the space, we left the plain space as ground, and it allows customers to walk around.” At the basement floor, they build a wooden arbour-like structure to create two areas: inside and outside.

Both the Aoyama store and the Ginza store, which was designed at the same time by Koizumi Studio, have a simple space with fewer elements made by natural raw materials.
