Tsukasa Okada, a director of 2id Architects, has designed DDD SOFA for the living room of two-family dwelling ‘Dan Dan Dan House’ that he designed in Hamamatsu ward, Japan. When we asked Okada about the design concept, he replied, “We couldn't find a suitable sofa for the tatami-mat living room, so we proposed an original design. If a typical sofa were installed in this room, the volume would be too large, so I started the design with a low seating, inspired by an image of ‘Zaisu’ chair, a traditional Japanese chair with no legs. Based on the Japanese design language and esthetics, we designed a simple composition of four pieces of oak planks. This wide sofa has a seat height of 300mm, which creates a sense of openness and spaciousness in the space. I also intended to minimize the bottom area of the leg parts as much as possible to create a floating and light feeling.” During the manufacturing phase, since it is a simple structure with only four planks and slight reinforcement, the furniture maker took special care to maintain the joint's durability.
Regarding the function of the sofa in this residence, Okada said, “I hope that people sitting on the sofa, sitting or lying down on the tatami mats will naturally gather around the sofa and encourage communication between the three generations of the family.”
