Tokyo based design studio MOMENT, founded by Hisaaki Hirawata and Tomohiro Watabe, has designed BAO BAO ISSEY MIYAKE in Ginza, Tokyo. They renovated the bag brand's store, which they designed in 2015 to partially expand the space, under the same concept as it was then.
Back in 2015, hammered aluminium was chosen as the primary material to express the character of the bag, which requires high craftsmanship in manufacturing. The designers explored and tested a variety of materials, including copper and brass, before finalizing on this hand-finished aluminium.
The hammering process creates scratches on the surface and slight differences in size, but such irregularities are treated as a positive hand-crafted texture. Besides, regardless of the site conditions, stores all over the world are planned under the rule of covering the surface with the custom-made hammered aluminium in order to establish a brand identity.
Since then, along with stores designed by MOMENT, it's no secret that the brand has spread globally. In this renovation, “we evolved the design of the hammered aluminium plates to achieve a delicate and softer look, for example, the details of the drawers,” said the duo.
