From 11 to 28 February 2021, CIBI, a well known Japan-inspired cafe and concept store, is currently hosting an Sekisyu Kawara Exhibition in Collingwood, Melbourne. ‘Kawara’ is Japanese for ‘fired clay roof tiles’, and Sekisyu Kawara products are manufactured in Shimane Prefecture in the southwest of Japan.

Zenta Tanaka, owner of CIBI, explains the concept behind the collaboration with the Seishu Kawara Industry Association, “Here in Melbourne, there is a growing interest in Japanese materials within the design community including architects and interior designers. In our store, we display a wide range of products from roof tiles, wall and floor tiles to tableware. We’d like to show visitors the colour and texture, also the charm of the artisan's handiwork, which is different from mass-produced products, as well as the superior quality due to the high temperature firing process around 1300°C.

Our local customers were fascinated by the colour of the glaze. In the second half of the exhibition, an online meeting is planned to connect Australian designers and builders with Japanese manufacturers. Although the distance between the two countries is not close, I am excited that this exhibition will encourage new relationships between Melbourne's design community and Sekisyu Kawara industries.”
