Inspired by In Praise of Shadows (陰翳礼讃) by Junichirō Tanizaki, I began to question what form light should take to be considered beautifully and distinctly Japanese.
Rather than emphasizing darkness, I came to believe that a quiet, natural luminosity is essential to expressing a Japanese sensibility of light.
Using washi paper, I created a space based on the concept of extending the shoji screen. By expanding its conventional dimensions and thickness, I enlarged the surface that receives and diffuses light.
Light shifts with time and weather. Through boxes made of washi, these subtle transformations become visible.
This work is a device for perceiving the delicate variations within light — and for finding beauty in those quiet changes.
